Position Overview: Land Solutions, LLC is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our growing team as a Part-Time Intern. The GIS Mapping Technician will be responsible for preparing shapefiles, processing, and integrating geospatial data to produce high-quality maps, figures, and AutoCAD files for environmental reports, permitting, and project planning. This role combines GIS expertise with AutoCAD proficiency to support environmental documents and projects that have engineering inputs. This Part-Time Intern position offers potential transition into a full time role upon graduation and opportunities for professional growth.
Work Schedule: •
Hours: 4–8 hours per day, 2–4 days per week (excluding weekends)
•Flexibility: Schedule can be adjusted to accommodate college classes
• Location: Primarily on-site; minimal remote work opportunities
Compensation:
• Hourly Rate: Starting at $15/hour, commensurate with experience (Recommendation: For candidates with relevant coursework or field experience, consider $16–$18/hour to remain competitive in the environmental consulting market.)
Key Responsibilities: • Data Preparation & Integration o Create shapefiles for use during data collection with a Juniper® Archer 4 handheld GPS device and the Unita® application that are used to collect field data. o Incorporate open-source GIS datasets (e.g., aerial imagery, topographic maps) with current conditions data to create accurate base maps.
• Mapping & Figure Preparation
▪ Prepare report figures that use Property boundaries from GIS tax records or client-provided data that the technician would obtain from open-source data
. o Including a total of 6 figures:
▪ Site location maps.
▪ NWI (National Wetlands Inventory) maps.
▪ USGS topographic maps.
▪ USDA soils maps.
▪ Recent aerial imagery.
▪ A base map is integrated with data collected to represent current conditions.
o Ensure all figures meet client and regulatory standards. •
CAD & GIS Deliverables
o In addition to report figures, create AutoCAD files and GIS shapefiles for submission to clients and regulatory agencies.
o Should the Client wish to seek a permit, generate permit figures using preliminary or final site plans provided by project engineers or designers.
• GIS Analysis
o Conduct GIS reviews to identify available land near project sites.
o Analyze and report on land development limitations based on environmental and regulatory constraints.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
Required Skills
• Proficiency in GIS software (ArcGIS or QGIS) and AutoCAD.
• Experience with the output from a GPS data collection device (preferably Juniper® Archer 4).
• Strong understanding of geospatial data formats (shapefiles, kmz, kml and AutoCAD files).
• Attention to detail and ability to produce publication-quality figures. • Ability to integrate multiple data sources (NWI, USGS, USDA, aerial imagery).
• Preferred Skills
• Knowledge of environmental mapping standards and permitting requirements.
• Analytical skills for land suitability and constraint analysis.
Required Certifications:
• GIS Certificate from an accredited institution or recognized program.
• Verification of coursework or documented experience with AutoCAD (e.g., transcript, training certificate, or portfolio demonstrating proficiency).
Preferred Qualifications:
• Associate’s degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, or related field.
• Familiarity with open-source GIS data sources, data management best practices and attention to detail.
• Experience in environmental permitting or land development projects.
