Responsible for the overall medical care of Wellness Clinic patients:

POSITION SUMMARY: The Wellness Clinic Veterinarian mainly provides wellness care including minor illness medical care, spay, neuter and other surgeries for public-owned animals in the Lake Humane Society’s Wellness Clinic. Provides back-up medical care, recommendations and treatment of shelter animals. Educates clients and staff on proper animal care and surgery follow-up.

Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent, Ohio Veterinary license and a Controlled Substance license from the DEA required and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Veterinary experience including sterilization surgeries required.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform physical examinations, diagnostic, medical and surgical procedures.
  • Complete post-op recheck exams and orders medical treatments as necessary to ensure complete surgical recovery.
  • Stay up to date with medical information and changes in veterinary medicine by attending continuing education in medicine and surgery.
  • Maintain medical records following all DEA, Ohio Board of Pharmacy and Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board rules.
  • Daily handling and recording of controlled substances. Audits drug log for accuracy.
  • Provides clinical supervision of Veterinary Technicians and Assistants. Alerts Medical Director to any serious performance concerns
  • Participate in community events as requested by Medical Director.
  • Participate in shelter staff meetings.
  • Communicates with clients about medical complications and recommendations; available for follow-up care during business hours.
  • Mirrors Lake Humane Society’s inclusive culture when communicating with members of the public.
  • Performs medical rounds, prescribe treatment for, and make recommendations for shelter animals in absence of the Medical Director.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Performs work in both a shelter and office like setting. Exposure to animals, animal waste, bites, scratches, fumes from cleaning/disinfectant solutions, airborne particles, zoonotic diseases, and moderate to high noise levels when in animal areas. Must be able to work in a small, often hectic environment. Must be able to work for extended periods of time standing or sitting in a small space.

  • This position is regularly required to use hands to fingers, handle, and talk and hear. The incumbent is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel or crouch. The position holder must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to focus.
  • Requires working alone or with minimal supervision. Must be self-motivated.
